At the 2011 Carter G. Woodson Awards Luncheon sponsored by the African-American Historical Association of Fairifield County, Connecticut, the Reverend Janene Hawkins (the first woman ever to hold the post of minister and spiritual head of Walters Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, the oldest black church in the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut's largest city) provided insight into the malaise of the quality of life for people of color in the 21st century, along with solutions for regeneration and improvement.
